During our holiday in Brittanny last month, my wife and I visited the Mont St. Michel twice. Both times it was quite hazy, the sky was an uninteresting grey, and there was no sunset visible. In short: boring!
So what do you do? Take a photo that's as good as you can get it, and combine it with an interesting sky in PhotoShop. This sky was from a photo I took in Normandy, last year. Both elements are therefore French, so that's okay, isn't it? ![]()
I quite like this, but let's hear what you think.
Comments and mods invited!
Thanks for looking,
Conrad

I really like it, you have done it well.
Why is theirs better looking than ours =0/
loved it, perfect lighting on the castle. Nice sky too - very dramatic. Great work. would love to see it large too.
Thanks, everyone!
Matt - Dear me, subliminal level. Well, actually, I did sort of look at which photos I could match and which weren't suited to eachother. The sky from Normandy had a lighthouse in front, and at about the same distance as the Mont St. Michel in the other. Everything my wife and I could think of, was made as realistic as possible. I'm not saying that we couldn't have missed anything, though. Thanks for pointing it out, Matt!
Darren - Funny you should say that, because as I understand it, both were built by the same religious order. Hmmm, maybe their headquarters in France was supposed to be more magnificent than a mere foreign branch... ![]()
Conrad
It is magical.
Almost Disney-like. Sorry to use that word about your image but I am sure you know where I am coming from with that remark.
A compliment all the way.
Excellent mood Conrad, well created. It's dark but not too dark, good shadow details.
Ian
Excellent moody sky, a well deserved RC award - click
LOL! I didn't mean to sound pretentious Conrad ![]()
Actually I've just realised what was niggling away... the lighting. The sky says the sun is setting behind MSM, yet the lighting on the top and front indicate the sun was to the left of the image.
It was actually an old image of mine: this that highlighted the importance of perspective. I had another stab at it by using the perspective tool on the sky and it was a lot more convincing.
It's funny with the brain - it's very good at highlighting little oddities without voicing them directly ![]()
But to say again, this image is very good work - and the twist with the lighting adds to the fairy-tale nature of the shot ![]()
Matt
Don't worry, Matt, I didn't take it the wrong way. And I have always been very impressed with what you do with PhotoShop, so I'm inclined to listen. Hmmm, the lighting. The reason why I thought it was okay, was that I have seen a situation like this in real life, where what looks like a sky that is lit from behind by a setting sun is actually lit from another side, with the last rays of the sun also highlighting other parts of the scenery. But that was only one time, so I'll admit that this wouldn't be the usual kind of situation, not the one you'd expect.
Oh well, I'm quite happy to go with the idea that my image is seen as having fairytale-like qualities! ![]()
Thanks for your detailed comments, Matt!
Conrad
I must not be awake yet.
(Pinch. Ouch! No, I'm awake.)
Hmmm. I did have a dream the other day about getting an EC, but that was clearly fiction.
Wow.
Thanks, Pete!
I can't quite get used to the idea yet. But I will, in time... ![]()
Okay, I think it's time I mentioned something that my wife (webjam) didn't want me put in my description: this was a joint effort. The two photos that were blended were mine, the ideas were mine, part of the execution was mine, but some of the finer PhotoShop work I have to credit my wife Jacqueline for - she knows a lot more about PS than I do. So: A big thank you to my lovely wife!
And thanks to everyone who commented and clicked, especially those who did so even before Pete had spotted this image!

Different view of this much photographed place. Wonderful light. Great.

Dan
Wow, great pic and wow so many comments, not much left to say except wow!
Well done Conrad.
Very well deserved - it's an awesome shot
Paul..
Hi Jules - No, well, it isn't real, so you're right. People have mentioned fairytale like qualities and being reminded of Lord of the Rings. It's just supposed to be a pleasing image, although I did try not to make it too unrealistic. Thanks for your comment!
Thanks, Jouko!
England? Oh, did they win a football match or something? I'm not into that. Ever since people began kicking eachother more than the ball, I haven't been interested anymore.
Conrad
I also missed this as I've not had much time to spend on here lately. You got one at last Condrad. Well deserved. It's a cracking image.
You have given this work true quality. Very impressive. Yvonne
Just found this again, Conrad since holidaying in Brittany. I was hoping to make it to this location but it was a bit far to travel unfortunately. I wish I'd made the effort though - it has so many photographic possibilities
Cheers, Paul
