I agree with the above - it's an excellent capture. I really like the nut carried in the mouth and the snow detail. A good sense of motion.

Just some minor tweaks in the mod I've uploaded for you. Firstly, a crop of the top of the pic, getting rid of the relatively featureless detail. Secondly, a curves adjustment to pull back detail in the snow on the branch. Finally, an adjustment, with the hue/saturation slider and photo filter, to remove a very slight blue cast and to bring out the squirrel's colour a bit more. Hope that's useful. Smile

A fantastic image Cheryl, love the snow being kicked up by his back feet and the nut in his mouth.

Thanks all.

Only one problem, all red squirrels are different colours, the one in the mod looks nothing like the one that I photographed.

As I said yesterday, when working on the laptop I only ever do minor adjustments as the screen is not good enough to make final decisions on. If I print or send to a magazine then I work on a calibrated monitor and will make more adjustments than just for posting on here. A blue cast is quite natural when shooting in snow Wink Especially given the overhead conditions at the time as it will reflect the colour of the sky.

As always I try to shoot full frame and in this instance prefer the 3x2 ratio and feel that the crop constrains the squirrel too much.

So thanks for the mod, personally I would not have marked that as constructive as I dislike almost everything about it except perhaps the curves which I never do on the laptop as it always looks under-saturated compared with what others see, so I always shy away and stick to standard tweaks. If I play with curves others tend to see an over-saturated result.

But each to their own.

Thanks all.

Every time I click on the mod to have a look, the Jessops advert totally gets in the way. Is anyone else having this problem, or is it just me?

I had problems loading it at first Natalie, but I'm on a slow dial-up so put it down to that, closed the window and tried again.

I would say it needs a slight tweak on the highlights if anything, snow looks a bit grey to me, other than that it looks good. The mod looks to have a magenta cast on it....

Nice capture Cheryl, like the motion in the back legs and the bits of snow flying about...

Thanks all.

Described the crop to a group of wildlife photographers as I was showing this image and they all said "NO!!!". So I think that was pretty clear - the crop is a no no.

Have some other action shots, but they may have to wait a while if any other species is to get a look in.
