The 'money shot' of a long and expensive tourist attraction on the east coast of the south island of New Zealand. You pay $130 or so (a little under 50 pounds) and sit on a boat for two hours in the hope of seeing one of these magnificent creatures (Sperm Whale apparently). When you do, it looks like a log in the water for 10 minutes and then it dives, which takes around 5 seconds, and this is the shot everyone gets. The postcards back on land are invariably better exposed and composed and cost about $127 less!! Apart from the motion sickness on the boat, I enjoyed it anyway!.

I love the story, and the picture. We spent two Portsmouth Bilbao ferry trips looking for cretaceans and only saw the spume from a sperm whale at a distance. Your picture is precious because you were there.
Go to the Azores. Closer, cheaper and a hugely more rewarding experience than shrink-wrapped-overhyped Kaikoura ![]()
I agree we sometimes spend a lot of time and money chasing our dream shot but the experience will stay with you for a long time. I stayed ashore at Kaikoura and got some wonderful shots of young seals playing in rock pools. Also took a cheap boat ride to see Hector Dolphins. Sylvia
