This picture was taken in Haridwar,an important Hindu pilgrimage center. In traditional Hindu societies,women do not cut their hair. Therefore,when hair is given as offering, it is given as an act of devotion.Men also make hair offering as acts of devotion.Also in traditional families,after a parent dies,the sons complelely shave their heads.This is not given as an offering.This act is an indication of the respect one has for his parent and also might have been a purification ritual.
