The side lit sand ripples are the star of the show and lead the eye in very effectively to the chain which then takes over; a great comp! Shame about the relatively empty sky but you just can't control these things (and it would take away a lot of the fun if you could!).

Looks like an old contrail echoing the line of the chain, unless it's just cloud... I love that kind of compositional subtlety.
Personally I think the relative lack of drama/interest in the sky is a good thing here, because there's so much going on at ground level the image might have become cluttered and over complicated otherwise.

Very strong foreground, Derek, (the ripples would make an image themselves) with the boats well placed in a fine pleasing image.
