Apologies to those who have commented on this today. I decided to delete and repost for some final adjustments.
Selective sharpening to the wing to overcome some movement during exposure (thanks Pete).
It looked great before .Looks supperb now.

This is really good Ian. Composition and focusing are good although I might have been tempted to dodge the highlight in the eye for more effect.

Thanks folks. Boyd, if you compare it with the previous version you will see it has been dodged a little. :0) I tried it a bit further and it looked unnatural, after all it was a very grey day. Cheers for the suggestion though.

+ve: Lovely detail, comp. Great BG
-ve: Can't see anything!
Reckon this is a more effective comp (tho' still like yesterday's as an alternate!) √ΜΛЯΚ

I think this is better, Ian, though I still liked the other one.
By View geoffash26's Portfoliogeoffash26 At 08:22AM - 04 Dec 2004
Liked the last and this I believe is has a better composition

I prefer this crop, but the magnification has hightened the fact the wing isn't sharp. Was that subject movement? The leg and face seem fine. Shame, because otherwise it's excellent.

Oh sod it, I thought this was destined to be an EC! lol. I'm not sure why the wing is slightly soft Pete, it looks like it may have been just settling its' feathers a touch. Oh well, try again.

terrific capture! click
A beautiful Barn Owl, lovely picture. NorahF
Great shot, well done.
A great shot,
Looking good Ian.
Love the composition Ian. Lovely catchlight and great colours.
Great, detailed capture. Click
Great picture, excellent detail
Second click of the day, Ian
Beautiful shot Ian, very well done.
Thanks for the comments folks. This is the 3rd version, I had to repost the second one after our esteemed editor noticed a slight movement blur on the wing feathers. I think I have corrected it in this one. No chance of an EC now though, Pete must be fed up of seeing it. lol
+ve: I prefer this to your previous ones, sharpening worked well.
-ve: The space on the right isn't "doing" anything.
Thanks Lauren. Maybe I'll wait until tomorrow before doing another version. lol. I can see what you mean, I think I was still seeing the frame there although it has now been cropped. Just shows it's difficult sometimes to see beyond your own memory of a shot.
classic pose well exposed and detailed, but appears a little lost in the black surround.
You had a good day at the owl barn. Well done.
This looks fine to me Ian, you could crop to a square format which may improve things a bit but I like it as it is. Your usual good detail, exposure and colour
Excellent. Great detail in the owl and I love the way you've positioned it in the frame. I think the large area of black on the right adds to the effect of the image. Great stuff ....click
sharp, very nice shot.
Really nice shot, was the background black or did you have to replace it?
Hi Ian really nice shot the bird and background are very well exposed sometimes the white of the subject can be to much of a contrast against the black b/ground this shot the bird seems to gently appear from the shadows you can almost feel the softness of it's feathers very nice shot.
Thanks again for the comments everybody.
A Booth - I have (yet) another version without the black on the right. It gives a different feel but I don't think I have a preference between the 2. As this is already v3 I don't think I'll bore ePz with any more, especially as opinion on the space seems to be divided. :0)
bppowell - The owl was on a window in an unlit barn, so the black background in natural in this case.
Yeah, the sharpening works well - otherwise comments as before! √ΜΛЯΚ
lovely shot, beautiful detail. chris
Wonderful detail and great positioning in the frame. Click.
Beautifully detailed shot Ian. I see you're getting the hang of your Niknak...LOL
Excellent shot. Love it.
Just stunning regards Tara x
DOH, how did that happen Ian got one of the first HCs - whatever next )
See I look the correct way when it matters Cheryl. lol
Well deserved HC, if only we could get that kind of sharpening all the time.Paul
Well deserved HC. If only we could get that degree of sharpening all the time.Paul
Well deserved HC Ian, congratulations.
Thanks Paul and Margaret. Paul I'm not quite sure I understand your comment correctly. The only bit of additional sharpening I have done is on the wing feathers, which had moved a little during the exposure.
Ian, I actually meant if only we could achieve crisp sharpness in our original shots all the time. Not implying that the sharpness was manipulated. Your obviously a very skilled photographer. My compliments.
Oh right, thanks Paul. I didn't think you were saying that I just wasn't sure what you meant. As to skilled photographer? Hmmm
A HC already Ian, how much did that cost?
It's a cracking shot.
Take the compliment Ian, your work is excellent. Paul
Great shot, Ian. Well deserved HC.
Thanks Paul, glad you thknk so.
Thanks for the comments Bernie and Conrad. I don't know how much it cost yet, haven't seen the bill. :0)
Nice. Very nice. Have one just like it.
I can appreciate a good image when I see it, even when it is not my type of photography, very well done, Ian, click (*:*)
Perfect exposure, composition and love the soft lighting
A magnificent bird, you have captured it perfectly.
Great image Ian. I'm in two minds about the composition as it breaks the 'rule' of leaving space for your subject to look towards. On the other hand, I like the slight edginess that this brings to the shot.
Don't know how to make this into a link but its a called Noiseware. The community version is a free download. Excellent for smoothing out scanned or grainy images.
Thanks John, I have some noise fixing software but are you saying you think this one needs it?
Dave, I think the reason it can break the rule is because it is only the head looking out of frame, the rest of the posture is pointing towards the space.
Thanks for your comments everybody.
A magic one. Well done. John
Cause not its a cracking shot! Just answering the question you asked when commenting on my Autumn Church Yard Shot.
Oh right, go easy John I'm easily confused. :0)
Well done on the HC Ian - very nice photo - sharp and vibrant and good to the eye.
A well deserved HC, Ian. The contrast of the black background and the owl's white feathers works really well.
I was lucky to see three wild barn owls hunting on a small stretch of motorway embankement at 4am a few weeks back. It looked like they were using the streetlights to help them see their prey in the grass. They would periodically hover over the grass then land on the barriers. Guess what? That's right, no camera! Wonderful bird.
Thanks all. Pete that's a missed oppotunity worthy of an award in itself. :0)
Great detail. John
That camera is going to cease up if you don't use it.
LOL Denny. It's getting used, just no time to sort out stuff to post.
I do like this one better than the previous one. The crop has helped to bring the viewer into the image quicker.
Excellent sharpness, great crop.
Super super shot
Thanks for the comments everyone.
like this, good composition and the colours are perfect, guddun.
Thanks for the comment on bullrush, had a go and reposted. It has given some extra detail and sharpness in the lights but that seems to be at the expense of the darks. All that doesn't matter though, these werwe very bad shots, any improvement is a result, but, much more important is the fun I had fooling around with them, thanks.
Thanks Mick. One of these days I may take a bullrush good enough to post. :0)
What a beauty - love the black BG - makes a nice change
Excellent photo. So clear and the detail and colour beautifull. Good work!!
A delightful study - well done on the HC!
Thanks again Susie
