On Friday evening, dad and I went out in the hope that the ash from the unpronounceable Icelandic volcano would give a strong sunset. It didn't but I still got some nice silhouettes of trees against what little there was. It turned out that the location wasn't ideal, either, and I had to lie on the floor and point the camera upwards to lift the tree above the horizon.
I'm not sure what kind of tree it is but I have a friend who could probably work it out. They did the trees part of her botany degree in the winter so, unlike most people, she can only identify trees when they have no leaves on them! ![]()
Any comments or criticism welcome.
Dave.

Very good silhouette shot with nice warm sky. Well taken.
I too have been out these past few days expecting some amazing sunsets due to the volcanic ash, so far nothing spectacular either.
Lets see what the coming evenings bring?
Ricky.
The tree has the shape of an oak, but don't take my word on that one! A beautiful picture, such wonderful colours - well worth the lay down on the ground!

Actually, I think the soft gradient of the sunset is perfect as it concentrates attention on the tree silhouette. Lovely shot, worth getting down and dirty for.
You cant get much better than this
So simple but so nice
Looks like an Oak shape, David, beautifully silhouetted against that sunset,
lovely image,
Adrian
Wonderful silhouette, love the colour of the sky.
I love it as is, and especially the warm tones at the horizon line, but since I've not had any Riesling today, I must make a mono version ![]()

Thanks for the mod, Anne! I'd not considered black and white but it does work well and produces a very different feel. I think I'd push the contrast a bit further, making the formerly red part of the sky brighter — the result feels quite a lot like a sunrise.
Quite a nice silhouette.Would have been tempted to crop and lose some of the black at bottom of shot and place the shot on a white canvas with a thin black keyline. For me there's just too much black, but that's just my humble opinion.
Holy cow...what a gorgeous shot! I love silhouettes and of course twilight silhouettes. You've certainly made the most of that sky, Dave.
Your friend who unintentionallly specialises in arboreal nudes - you should get her to find out what this tree is 'cos it makes a good foredrop for a sunset.
As for you falling flat to get this shot, now that's commitment ![]()
Love the bronchiole-lungishness of this silhouette, by the way.
Andrew

I take it you shoot in RAW, so you could process this yourself using those wonderful filters. I love to play around with b&w filters to see the different effects.

Yes, I've been shooting RAW since I got the new laptop around this time last year. It's always good fun to play around with filters on black and white conversions. Somewhere on my hard disk, I have a rose that's been rendered black by one filter and white by another. I should dig it out and post it, if I'm happy with the quality.
Lovely presentation Dave, lovely color and silhouette,
Geoff.
"They did the trees part of her botany degree in the winter so, unlike most people, she can only identify trees when they have no leaves on them!" - love it !!!
Very eye-catching silhouette
Helen
Talk about getting the colours of nature so beautiful that almost jumps off the screen and this can be used as a perfect example.
I wouldn't shatter so many glasses or spill so many drinks and squash fruits if I could take shots like these ![]()
