Using a slow shutter speed for waterfalls is a popular technique and this is the ultimate version of that. You guys call 1/4s slow but, come on, it isn't — it's less than the average blink of an eye (about 1/3s).
At Cleopatra Terrace, run-off from a hot spring flows down a little hill, depositing minerals as it cools. At the moment, the flow is just a trickle but you can see a whiff of steam at the top. I figure the effective exposure here has to be at least several decades. ![]()
I've posted both in black and white and in colour and I'd be interested to hear your opinions on which works best, or on anything else, for that matter!

Fascinating - personally I prefer the colour version.
Maybe that heat haze shows better in mono, rather than against the strong blue sky. But for me "yellow stone" works best in colour

Funnily I thought this looked like a macro of some special bread!!!!
Now I have looked a bit closer ,, Large version
A great shot and really cant decide which version I prefer
Although the exposure is spot on here, the details come across far better in the coloured version. A super image that would also make an interesting abstract if you cloned out the sky. This is great viewed Large, with some stunning colours and textures.

For me it is very difficult to pick between the two images. I see textures in the B&W, and tones int he colour version. If I had to pick one for the wall (as they are both strong candidates for a wall), then I would go for the B&W. Perhaps this is because I am in a very B&W frame of mind lately; I am finding that B&W uncovers a hidden image behind a colour version. In this instance, the textures really come to life in the B&W which may have been unobserved or not as prominent in the colour version. That said I do like the contrast of the hillside against the deep blue of the sky.

The patterns are wonderful and I enjoyed viewing the colour version the most.
Great image Dave, color for me this time, an informative write up too,
Geoff.
Thanks for the mods, Andrew — much appreciated! I can't really judge the colour one as it's hard to look past the fact that the fairly pale oranges in the version I posted are how I remember the formation to be, whereas they've become darker and browner in your mod. The black and white works really well and I think it treats the highlights better than my version.
Doh! I didn't realise I'd gone and changed your oranges to browns, Dave. Bah. I was going for more emphasis on texture and deeper lines and didn't consider the hues.
As for the BW, same...I was going for deeper texture as well. And the sky is dark but I thought I'd use the excuse of "I was giving it a nighttime feel"...lol

Very nice shot (both versions) The colour version alamost looks like a fabric quilt with the patterns.
Nicely taken.

I think that both are excellent images. It depends on what I want to get from your images. From artistic point view,I perhaps prefer V1, strong pattern, texture etc.If I want to gain more realistic information about this place,I would look at V2.It tells me weather, mineral colour etc.

Ansel eat your heart out - the difference between the mono and the color version is incredible. I do go for the mono though - I'm often in a mono mood, but then I take a glass of wine, and color returns to my world. ![]()

Hmmm, never thought of that, but that might explain a lot of things!!
