Allium christophil, the wandering stars of the July garden here. They started life at the furthest edge of my garden but once the seedheads dry they roll elsewhere in the wind and now grow in a large swathe at the opposite end of the flower garden. Thankfuly even the weather of summer 2012 has done nothing to prevent their beauty and they are much appreciated not only by mere humans but also by visiting Bees and Hoverflies. There's a little Hover hidden within one version which you might enjoy trying to find.
These flowers grow from bulbs, reach a height of between 15 and 40 cm (6-16 ins) and have a large, spherical umbel of 50 or more star-shaped, purplish-violet flowers. All forms of ornamental Allium are cousins to the Onions you use in your dinner!

Difficult flowers to do justice to, Ann, but I do like what you have done here: V 1 in particular presented with that slight vignette and the open gaps between the full florets letting the eye travel into the sphere to see those yet to open is my favourite.
Ronnie.
V1 is very effective, the soft vignette enhances the delicacy of the subject.

A beautiful construction of natures work Ann and three outstanding close ups with superb light colour and detail. I found the little hover fly in the top right hand corner in V2 and in the middle right hand side in V3
this is well good work and top shots.

From delicate to bold frame filling, all three look good to me, Ann.

Such a lovely way to present these, going in close for the stars detail.
Two lovely things I've just learnt. One, the word 'umbel'. Two, that Allium is about onions and not just garlic!
3 lovely shots of these beauties, Ann. V1 is superb for the presentation, but V2 has to be my favourite. The colour and richness there are ammmaaazing.
Is that the hover in V2 at the top?

A beautiful set Ann,I find it so hard to capture this colour, well done..Lin
These clumsy florets brought out so well, Ann.Buds & florets have lovely color. In V1 the top left floret has excess number of petals & stamens (a mutant?). - Raja.
A top class set with v1 being the pick of the bunch
