A relaxed and happy capture, but don't be afraid to crop a little tighter, so that the portrait can have even more impact.

Nick

Hello, Brian, and what an excellent portrait of your son, Ben. He is smiling, has nice catchlights in his eyes, a wonderful complexion and you've captured him with a good clean background, a little shadow and fine focus.
I have done a modification to give you an idea for a little better result, as I see it, but there is certainly nothing wrong with your photography skills here. I firstly adjusted the perspective of the blinds behind Ben, then cropped for a closer portrait. By adjusting highlights, shadows and levels, I brought the image a little more to life in the way of colours, contrast and light. I did just a tiny bit of cloning on Ben's teeth where there were some black areas, but didn't soften the image because his complexion and freckles are too endearing. In fact, I gave in to a little bit of sharpening as I feel it's an informal shot, not a studio portrait. Hope my mod meets with your approval.
Pamela.

Thanks to Nick and Pamela for their excellent suggestions and the fine work done by Pamela in enhancing this picture. I am only just getting to grips with image manipulation so your detailed critique is most welcome. Thanks again
