Back to the butterflies for today and an Apollo photographed in Spain earlier this year. I saw 4 or 5 individuals but this one was of particular interest as it's a pregnant female with the sphragis in position. The sphragis is a form of chastity belt and is secreted by the male during copulation. After copulation the secretion hardens to form a horny structure which prevents any other males from copulating with the female.
