A bird for a change!

One big suprise in Crete was the number of kingfishers. They were virtually everywhere we went on the coast, and sometimes we'd see two or three together. I understand they migrate over from the continent for the winter. I never realised they could travel that far over water!

Slightly dodgy walking about with a 400mm telephoto lense with all the sunbathers on the beach, but the result was this shot from about 10m away. Never managed to get this close to one with a camera in my hand before. It's a pity it's not sitting on a reed by a river - it's sitting on a wall looking for fish in the sea , but I was quite chuffed none the less Smile I also never realised they fed in salt water!

Adaptable Kingfishers, they feed here in Britain also on the coast when Rivers are in flood or lakes frozen. Excellent image.

A belter, John, they seem to favour the side of the island you were on, I have only ever seen one here in the West, and that was at a great distance awaySad Carol

That;s a corker John, superb detail, I love it and it makes a refreshing change to see that they are not always sitting on a pretty perch Wink
