Red-spotted Purple
Basilarchia astyanax 3-3 1/2 inches

A large colorful butterfly that will be seen in woodlands and lawns and gardens. Red-spotted refers to bright red spots on the underwing! View 2

Apologies to those who have commented on the Eastern Tailed Blue--- I will do some more work on the image and repost another time. Thanks to Ronnie AG for very appropriate suggestions!

Now, these are two class shots, Jenn: I especially love V 1 in which the darkish insect displays so well against the light greens of the surrounds.
I thought at first we had 2 different butterflies here until I read your intro.
Ronnie.

I love them both, Jenn. I think I prefer the simplicity of V1, with an almost metallic quality to the wing color.

Version one for me today Jenn, just for keeping so much detail in those black wings, not always easy to achieve.

This one is beautiful on both sides - you are fortunate to be having so many butterflies. Very sparse here right now, and hoping it will get better as the weather cools. Queens seem to be the only kind I see. Although, I did find a black swallowtail cat on my parsley this morning. It was a big one, so it's probably going to wander away from the plant soon.
