Some photos from a shoot for this wonderful jazz singer's forthcoming album. We wanted an old retro feel so shot around Cardiff Bay (as she is from there, and it's integral to her music), then inside in one of the pubs. Once the safety shots were covered I asked her to sing and tried to emulate the feel of a performance in a small corner of the pub! Critique welcomed....

A superb set of images, great tones and fantastic mood with everyone, but V1 and V3 are just absolutely terrific images.....V1 is either the album cover or the inside sleeve cover, with V3 the other one, whichever way round.....just brilliant. Would make me pick it up in a record shop, definitely!
Lots to like, good in mono with the high contrast, excellent exposure, sharp and good use of dof ( or blur)
However, She looks to me like she is smiling, and hitting her head on the microphone. I find this a bit confusing and not sure what you are trying to get across. I would liked to have seen an emotion and or a feel that she is singing, rather than this head down pose.
I think the lone pointing finger is a bit unfortunate as well.
She is a great subject, with good lighting. Can't help thinking this was so nearly a great shot.
You have reminded me of a shot i did,
here

Thanks everyone. Martin, it's my new ambition in life to take a photo that you absolutely fall in love with
This was shot at the time that she was singing; she just burst out laughing at one point and I took the shot. I liked the spontaneity of it; maybe it's one of those 'you had to be there' photos...
The light - it was window light with a guy on reflector duty to get it to 'kick' a little.
Martin - I loved that series you did with the jazz singer. I bought this microphone last year after having seen your photos; I've only used it twice but it's a good example of how a well-chosen prop can make a difference to a photo.
Thanks again!
Geraint, love the pointing finger in #1, adds to her emotion.
For me though #3 and #4 really shine.
