This picture dates from around summer of 1958 at the Variety Club annual party for the stars in London's Battersea Park.
Dame SHIRLEY BASSEY is interviewed by BBC news reporter for the Overseas Service out of Bush House,in the Strand, the late LESLIE BELL.
Leslie was my mentor all those years ago,and through him I got my first big break into Fleet Street. The rest is history....
Leslie was one of those guys that had 2 voices,a posh accent for broadcasting, and a normal voice like anyone else 'off the air'.
It was a great period to be around.

Lovely shot, Horace. Dame Shirl recorded, what to me was, her most memorable song "As I Love You" in 1958 (had to look the year up) and it was her first number one in 1959. But I'm sure you know that. Your photos and little interesting snippets of information are a pleasure to view, Horace. When are you going to write that book? ![]()
Best wishes.
Peter
