My Aunt Hope, about a mile away, my father's baby sister, is a wonderful gardener. She has a rhododendron that is blooming pretty early. V1 is a tight crop, to give essence of pink. V2 is the full photo.

I remember enormous rhodedendron bushes at the house I lived in until I was 8: it's now a care home instead of a Rectory, and there are houses where the bushes were.

In Wales, they're now regarded as weeds, running rampant through oak woodland.

But they are beautiful...
