Some years ago (I think in the late 1980's), driving on a back country road in Upstate New York, we passed this TR-4 set up on a short 4 WD chassis, up on a bank, for sale. I drove past, then turned around and came back. How often do we see images worth photographing while driving, and choose not to stop, too much bother? This time, I stopped, and always have felt like it is a sort of strange image. Who would think to put a Triumph sports car on a clearly custom, short 4WD drivetrain. The trip was a kind of sentimental journey with my Dad, to places that we had each lived in earlier in our lives, he inSyracuse, me in Ithaca, and was the last trip he and I ever took together.

They wanted to make sure people like you understood the car was FOR SALE, for God's sake! There are three signs, hahahaha!

I am glad you took that trip with your dad. Mine passed away while I was abroad (U.S.A.) in a long and thorny Graduate Program.

I had a boyfriend in the US that probably would've stopped and asked how much for the vehicle. Smile

One way to take your little sports car up into the mountain outback. An unusual but interesting image. Nice you got to see it with your dad......Sandy

I saw it on old Route 17, paralleling the current main road that runs along the Southern Tier of New York, as I remember, somewhere west of Ellenville.

How utterly weird... Not to try to sell a car with such a need for a quick wipe-over with an oily rag, but to put a TR body on a drivetrain like that.

Shoving it so far up in the air would not have an entirely beneficial effect on the handling, I feel! Maybe a lesson in how to utterly bugger up the way a car works?

I bet they'd replaced the endgine, as well: I'm not entirely sure what a 4 had under the bonnet: I will never forget a couple of short trips in a friend's TR6, with the lovely, fuel-injected straight six. The revs went up fast, and the fuel level went down almsot as rapidly...
