This guy in some places is known as "mountain chicken" for the volume of muscle (read meat--SimonFletch) on his legs.....to the point where in some places they have been driven almost (or all the way) to non-existence for people eating frog's legs. Also a great jumper. No surprise, but not good enough to get away from hunters. Thanks for all your votes and comments on our friend Jabba the Hut.

Frog Legs
Smokey jungle frogs are excellent jumpers, but their powerful thigh muscles often land them on human dinner plates. Other large frogs throughout Central and South America are also used in gourmet cooking, and some populations are suffering. One species from the Caribbean island of Dominica has been eaten to the brink of extinction. Local people refer to these endangered frogs as "mountain chicken."

Smokey Jungle Frog
Leptodactylus pentadactylus

Class: Amphibia
Family: Leptodactylidae
Size: Up to 8 inches
Food: Insects, rodents, snakes, frogs
Range: Southern Central America and northern South America
Habitat: Semiaquatic
Life Cycle: These frogs deposit their eggs in floating foam nests in shallow water. The tadpoles wriggle free after hatching.

Well, I can't say this particular one looks very appetising to me, Peter...!
I do quite like frogs legs, a popular food in France, where thankfully, they are farmed.
What is man doing to this planet...?
Great narrative, Peter and a great image.

Simon

what are we doing to this planet? How long do you have, Si on. As for animals, between habitat loss, eating them, and climate change, we are in the midst of the sixth great extinction in Earth's geologic ic history.

Not surprised Simon eats frogs legs lol....couldn't imagine any thing worse....they really did put on a great display of frogs Peter, he does look rather cute though. A great narrative, it is rather sad that so many animals are facing extinction because of mans greed. Another excellent capture...

Great series Peter. Think we all have views on the state of the planet. Glad I'm old enough to remember the good. Peter.

Lovely close up and an interesting read. Shame to hear they are being persecuted like that when there is more than enough to eat without resorting to munching on these poor creatures.
