There are populated islands, off of Puno, that are called, and are in fact, floating islands. They are called the Uros Floating Islands, though the Uros people no longer exist. They are populated by the Aymara Indians. The islands are about three meters thick, and are built of totoro grasses, which the boats are also built of. These grasses grow on the lake. Some of the images show the people working with the grasses.

If there is a dispute on among people on one, or another island (there are many, each is a community), the saw off part of the island, and it floats over to join another island. The boats shown here are traditional, but today built mostly for tourists. The people now use modern small boats with motors.

What interesting places you get to visit!

Love the idea of sawing off part of the island and letting it float away if you fall out with someone. Only problem is that it makes it very difficult to make up again Smile
