I have occasionally mentioned that professionally, I am a studio furniture maker. I work with anodized aluminum, wood, glass and fabrics (for chairs). I make custom furniture for my clients. It is why I go to craft shows. And now and then, I need to make new pieces with no client, to show, and to sell. With this cabinet, I also got to bring in the art form I have worked at since I was a kid, spending more time in my darkroom than I did doing homework. The doors to this cabinet are "picture frames", with the photo (three crops of a single image, included as V3). The black is all aluminum, and the corners and "center" element are slotted with the cherry screwed into the metal slots from the inside, and the whole cabinet held together mechanically. The base reflects my fascination with bridges, as a structure, as an architectural form, and as a metaphor. The doors open with push latches. Any knobs on the doors would be a visual intrusion. I have another cabinet in the works that will use a photo in the door, with the plan being to print on aluminum rather than paper (this is paper mounted to an aluminum backing). The photo is of grasses in Long Pond on Mount Desert Island, Maine. I felt that for a photo to integrate with a furniture piece, it needed to be something of an abstraction.

So, I wanted to show this piece, and to show a little of what I do during the day.

The photos of the cabinet are by my old and good friend Karen Mauch, who specializes in photography of art and does this much better that I would.

And thanks, once again, to Trev, Marian, Jocelia, Herman, Dawn Michele, and all who voted for my sunset and sailing images and UA's/

Peter

I like your train of thought which makes the cabinet very arty and abstractive. And I would like to buy one if you sell it in China.

I do hope you sell these works of art at premium prices Peter, to give an example David Linley (or Viscount Linley) charges about £45,000,00 for a desk, if the name is not familiar he is the Son of Princess Margaret and Anthony Armstrong Jones who was a very fine photographer, have a look at the link and gasp at some of his prices.

Had to be you, Peter!

The question is:

which is the work, and which is the hobby; OR

is the first question meaningless?
