So this trip to visit with John and Karen is to spend time with a certain definition of family. Karen is my cousin's first cousin on the "other" side, but as her husband John said, at some point in life, you choose who 'your family is. They have a lovely, fairly secluded house in the Berkshires, about half an hour from Pittsfield. We did some reasonably serious (John and I) walking in the snow, in the woods, with their indefatigable Chocolate Lab, Spu (Spumante). The next series of photos will be of that walk in the woods.

Pictured here are a couple of images of birch trees, in this case, what is called paper birch. We see very few birches in Pennsylvania....too warm. You get to see them as you go north into New England. The you see birch forests and pine forests.

The cherry trees do this, as well as the paper bark maple, but I do love to see a birch tree!
