Apologies to those who voted and commented before, i took it down to re-do without the mess of the backdrop....I havenn't touched the backdrop, just reduced the sats and a touch of levels, contrast and clarity in raw.

i have two crops as i don't know which i prefer, and mods welcome, i dont know how to alter the backdrop darker without blurring lines close up to the skin..

I think I prefer V2. V1 is a little too close.

What a marvelous face and so sharp I love the highlights in the eyes! V2 for me as I like to see more of his hat! BG is fine!

Hard to say which crop I prefer as both offer things that the other doesn't. One thing that is consistent are his eyes which look fabulous.

I am torn too, i love his eyes in V1 and v2 for the extra hat which is all about him, but those eyes......a wonderful man a regular where we have our camera club (Toms pub, the Bridgend) and he kindly agreed to his photo taken....

a good capture of a face full of character, defo v2 for me.lesley

I actually prefer this to the original upload. I think V1 has more impact due to the closeness. An excellent image all round. Lovely catchlights too

Good character study, plenty of details in that lived-in face. The wider V2 works best for me.

V.1 for me

Great subject Helen, superb detail, my choice is v1. I prefer the tighter crop, think its all about the face detail so the hat doesn't matter. Well done
