100 years ago they didn't have fuel prices going through the roof, but then again they didn't use much fuel! They relied on wind power, and when it didn't blow, out came the oars!!
And, using those oars and choosing the right time of the tide, this Thames Barge, sailing out of the the Swale between Sheppey and mainland Kent (The Swale is the only river in the UK with two mouths) it took less than five minutes to get a mile down the river.
I could go on about the joys of yesteryear, but it was taken yesterday morning!! ![]()
I've uploaded the original for comparison.
Thanks for looking.

This so cool - very well done indeed and I know I am right because I have a photograph of an East coast barge taken 100 years ago being hauled out of Lowestoft by an early water-paddle steamer. Your sepia image could easily pass as the real thing - so brilliant

wonderful shot...looks well in the mono tone.. give a different feel to the shot
This works perfectly in black and white Ian, I like the fall of the sails and the composition, a really lovely shot.
I didn't know you were around 100 years ago!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol

I prefer the colour one with the strip of colour on the water. Trish
