100 years ago they didn't have fuel prices going through the roof, but then again they didn't use much fuel! They relied on wind power, and when it didn't blow, out came the oars!!
And, using those oars and choosing the right time of the tide, this Thames Barge, sailing out of the the Swale between Sheppey and mainland Kent (The Swale is the only river in the UK with two mouths) it took less than five minutes to get a mile down the river.

I could go on about the joys of yesteryear, but it was taken yesterday morning!! Wink
I've uploaded the original for comparison.

Thanks for looking.

This so cool - very well done indeed and I know I am right because I have a photograph of an East coast barge taken 100 years ago being hauled out of Lowestoft by an early water-paddle steamer. Your sepia image could easily pass as the real thing - so brilliant

This works perfectly in black and white Ian, I like the fall of the sails and the composition, a really lovely shot.

Cracking mono Ian. God!!, I didn't realise I was so old. I can remember when sailing barges came up the River Fal, with cargoes of coal to feed our local gas works. Thanks for your visit.

Geoff

I prefer the colour one with the strip of colour on the water. Trish

Much prefer the monochrome Ian . The coloured version looks rather garishly coloured and more of today than yesteryear xxx

Enjoy every minute , because you're in it !! xx
