Saltwick  Bay SunsetGreat colourful image of a classic view Phil, I almost went here on Saturday but other things took priority so I didn't even get to take the camera out all weekend Sad
Hope you don't mind me offering a little constructive critique, but the lower half of your composition seems a little overexposed in comparison to the sky (it could be the poor monitor I'm look at it on Wink ). You should be able to tone this down in post-processing it might even bring out some more tones and colours. Watch your blues as well, I don't know whether you have targeted blues specifically or simply used the saturation function, but if you look to the top right the processing has been pushed a little too much and circles are starting to appear.

South Gare 2Hi Phil, lovely image. Colour and detail are spot on.
Good luck with the competition, I do have a few constructive comments for you to consider:

1. I don't know whether it's my monitor, but the cloud appears to have an almost halo effect, this could be from processing when recovering the shadow detail or sharpening, it's been pushed a little too much (in the sky at least). Try masking the sky when sharpening and recovering the shadows.

2. Around the jetty posts you seem to have some fringing (chromatic aberration) easily resolved in processing.

The next bit is a personal preference so not to everyones taste......

3. Square crop ? Looks quite nice in square format allows the jetty to make more of an impact by lowering it in the frame. Trade up is you lose a little of the reflections at the bottom, but not so much you lose all of the cloud reflection (just up to where the colour starts). Also you will lose a little of the cloud in the sky, but nothing that affects the impact of the image.

You would have been better putting this into the critique gallery rather than the main voting gallery, you would get some good advice from there and allows people to show you via the modifications tab.

The Ridge

The RidgeSame as Richard, I like the way the lines lead to each group of trees but intersect towards the bottom third. I'm just wondering what the balance of te image might look like if you crop off half of the sky to put the tree line in the top third, just a thought. Well captured, Ian.

Roseberry From Cliff RiggOne of my fave locations. Lovely light and blue sky. I hope you don't mind me saying but it looks like you may have pushed your grad down a little too far here (if you did use one). I've tried using grads here too and found the effects un-natural as the tree canopy tends to be very dark underneath and detail can be lost. I've found a polariser to be the simplest way or even a bit of exposure blending to get the best from this location.

Ashness BridgeHi Chris,

This is quite a good image considering your new to photography and it's only your second time out with your camera.

You talk about editing, but I think you first need to considered your camera settings and approach ?
Did you use any filters here, I only ask as there seems to be some colour cast in the bottom third ?
Instead of recording images on JPEG, have you tried shooting RAW ? This will enable you to recover a lot more detail in the image during post processing (i.e. recovered that sky a little).
Why did you opt for an aperture at f/29 @ 37mm ? Next time try between f/11 - f/16, this will also increase your shutter speed as i think 20 sec is too long for this scene, a couple of secs will blur the flowing water sufficiently.
Your metering mode (Evaluative) is fine, if anything the sky should have been toned down and in turn would make the trees and foreground darker, so to me in post processing you have increased the brightness levels to bring back the detail in the shadows hence blowing highlights. I don't think adding contrast has lost the detail in the sky.

There are many ways to approach post processing for this image. If it was me I would have taken multiple exposures in the field as grad filters would have been difficult to use. Basically a shot exposing the sky (detail in highlight) and another exposing everything else (detail in shadows). These can then be blended together. So google Luminosity masking, blending images and you will have plenty of reading. If you didn't take multiple exposures, you could use the same image and save one with the sky exposed and another for everything else, again blending would be required.

I remember when I started out my father-in-law would get me to set the camera to manual mode and at a set Av I would go through the different shutter speeds to see the effect it had and again changing ISO. This helped to understand the relationship between AV, TV and ISO.

I hope this has been some help, it will take a while to get used to and I'm sure you will get there. If I can be of anymore help let me know.

Reeds and reflections

Reeds and reflectionsA beautiful setting with some wonderful early morning light. I hope you don't mind me offering some advice from an outsiders perspective.
I see two things that draw my attention. The first being the tree which has the top cut off, perhaps a step or two back would allow you to include the top of it, but I understand you may lose some of that wonderful reflection so another option would be to use a portrait composition. Secondly, there is lense flare from the left of the image and amongst the reeds, when this happens you could try turning your camera a few degrees away from the sun, but if you start to lose too much of the scene you're trying to capture you could use your hand to block the rays hitting the lense, I sometimes use my filter pouch as it is a good size and black. Of course these things could be manipulated in PS, but if you're like me it's better to get it right in the camera so you don't spend much time in front of a PC.

St Marys Lighthouse at Sunrise ..Hi David, it seems you already have an idea of how to improve the image. This is a place I would love to photograph and if I was going to create a comp of this lighthouse I would consider a number of things, excuse me if you have already considered these:

1. Is there any foreground interest I could use to give it more depth, rocks, seaweed, rockpools etc?
2. Leading lines, perhaps any fissures or trickles of water leading towards the light house.
3. Stepping back - the sky looks really good here, I would have considered a change of position to to reduce the size of the lighthouse so you could include more sky and maybe any sea, essentially creating more of a panoramic (tide looks out here so may have been difficult).
4. ND Grad - I don't know whether you used one, but this will help bring out more detail in the foreground.
