Hi Brian his body lenght is about an inch and a half,as fat as your little finger.wing span is about 10cm

My other half tells me it's an Eggar Moth...female,the male is a little smaller, darker,thinner abdomen & has feathered antennae.

thankyou Janet and other half,clint and myself have looked in our books and the internet but could not find it.

Thanks Jacquie - went through both of my moth books last night after seeing this. I am sure it's an Eggar as Janet has said. There are several types though but the size and colour of this one suggests it's a female 'Oak Eggar'.

Others beat me to it with the ID. I only know this one because I found one in the New Forest and it posed beautifully for me. Certainly chubby, and a nice find. The males fly during the day, the females by night, which makes one wonder when they meet, lol.
