The Chichester Cathedral Restoration & Development Trust organise a flower festival every other year to raise funds for the trust. It is a mammouth task, which takes two years in planning, involves some 600 volunteers, 30,000 + stems of flowers, plus trees, shrubs and associated foliage, and countless props, many of which are made for the occassion. The patron this year is Peter Seabrook.
The theme for the 2008 festival was "Celebration and Rememberance". The theme was chosen to celebrate the 900th anniversary of the consecration of Chichester Cathedral and in Remeberance of Bishop George Bell, who was responsible for commisioning much of the modern art that is displayed in the cathedral. He was Dean of Canterbury Cathedral where he instigated the Canterbury Festival and commissioned "Murder in a Cathedral" by T.S.Elliott. He was appointed Bishop of Chichester in 1929.
