The title is only a partial p*ss-take... Wink

I took this for a few reasons:

- Firstly, to give the OnOne DSLR Remote iPhone application a decent run out.
- Secondly, to have a play with some new light stands.
- Finally, as a bit of personal challenge... I'm not particularly happy with the amount of weight that I'm carrying at the moment, and I wanted to try and take a half decent photo that didn't show me up for being a fat ****er.

Lit, in limited space, using three flashguns in my spare room: Two either side of my back at a (roughly) 2:1 ratio to give the main light. Both were gridded (16 degree on the main light, ~8 degree on the fill light). Another flashgun snooted to give a bit more light onto my face.

I'd love to say that the image is right out of camera, but I'd be lying... There's a fair amount of softening, dodging and burning gone on to try and make me half way presentable Wink There's also (hopefully) a variant uploaded with a lighting diagram for your viewing pleasure...

Spot on as far as I'm concerned. This is beautifully lit and composed. I also like the heavy frame, it goes well with the subject (not infering anything about you here though you understand!). Chers, Tony.

Yes I like it too, thanks for sharing the lighting positions and techniques. Using lights and off camera flash for portraits is something I'm keen to learn about
Kind regards
Phil

Liking the work, and the lengthy description coupled with the lighting diagram is more than helpful.

Superb shot and the lighting diagram idea is a cracker! Real good for OCF newbies like myself! Thanks!

I think it looks rather good James, the only distraction is the rather harsh lighting on the arm, toning that down a bit and I think any client in a similar shot would be most happy.

I hate my own photo, but then I don't do portraits of anything that cares, so I don't need to worry about being uncomfortable in front of the camera myself.

I can't really reconcile shy James with Pole-Dancing James on the Graham Norton show, now I'm sure that link hasn't been posted for a while Grin

I agree on the lighting Cheryl... It's both impatience and over-dodged. The truth of the matter, however, is that the shot took the best part of 90 minutes to get close to being right - and this was pretty much the "oh, f*ck it" moment... I had the camera controlled remotely from my phone, 3 lights, and masking tape on the floor to remind me where to stand! Having a model would be easier, but it at least proved my point of being able to not look like a biffer (provided my lower 2/3's were missed out!). Smile

THIS LINK you mean? Tongue (NSFW)

LOL! Glad it is not just me that has those... especially doing self portraits! Smile

The horrible part was realising that I only had 4 flashguns and 4 grids, and knowing that I could have used double the number of both... I think I might be becoming obsessive. Sad

You know I think the portrait is awesome but I hadn't seen the Graham Norton Pole dancing, Wow, just when you think you've seen everything, OMG, snake hips, lol!

OMGG! Bushel - light interface... Is that for real? You kept that (relatively) quiet!! Nice self portrait BTW...

Obviously, the member with the most epz stars will have his image gracing Mandy's walls Smile

nice one! Interesting, hope you're well? Thanx, M, (*_*)
