Flying out of the sun

Flying out of the sunNice composition Dave but perhaps not quite as sharp as they could have been. Looking at your camera settings you had it on shutter speed priority with shutter speed set at 1/160 and a high ISO at 640 which has meant that the aperture has been very, very small at f29. At this size you can get a loss of sharpness due to diffraction. You could have put the ISO right down to reduce noise and given yourself a much faster shutter speed which would have helped prevent any motion blur and this would have allowed the aperture to open up somewhat. DOF should be fine at anything around f8-f11. Hope this is helpful.

Before Dawn

Before DawnI think you have done a pretty good job with the processing Nigel. You do get a bi of a blue cast with the long exposure and sometimes that can be very advantageous - other times like this you will want to correct it in ACR. I tend to go for the higher f numbers to get the dof and dont worry too much about how long the exposure is - within reason - max I have done so far is about 450 secs. If you do go for open aperture and slightly shorter exposures it does open the option of using bracketed exposures one for the f/g and one for the sky and then blending them. I found this very useful technique the other day.

Tyne Valley Sunrise

Tyne Valley SunriseExcellent Nigel. I would still be inclined to take a little more from the right to focus on that wonderful distant light. Have uploaded a mod cropped to show what I mean.

Take Off

Take OffVery well caught Nigel and the crop suits it well - I think I would have liked to see a bit more space in front of it though - I can see that you wanted to keep the nicely frozen splash behind but there is one close to its feet and it might be a bit more balanced if there was room for it to move into as it were. Anyway just a thought - its a great shot.

Carrion Crow

Carrion CrowYou have captured the detail in this very underrated bird's feathers superbly Bill. However, as a result the grass in the f/g is a bit too bright and rather distracting - I would be inclined to darken this down a touch. Great shot though.

Crag Lough

Crag LoughThe composition is spot on Nigel and the letterbox crop works really well. I would probably have either used a grad or taken two shots exposed for sky and f/g and then combined them with layer masks but you have brought out some nice detail and colour in the sky with your processing.

Refectory

Refectoryv2 for me also Nigel. v1 would work well if the top was cropped IMO - at present there is just too big a block of black with no detail. This is great work in low light and I agree about the high ISO - not a problem at all.
