The notice is on the wall of the engine shed at Tanfield Railway, Co.Durham. I've no idea what a Rapper in the world of steam engines did/does. Any ideas?

See here
Scroll down to BEDLINGTON COLLIERY. A PIT.
and then the paragraph on signalling...not very informative, but all I found...endless rope is named several times as well.

Thanks Malc. I've had a look. My curiosity is aroused! I'll see what I can find out. It may become a lifetime quest!

Cheers,

Found it!SmileA rail rapper is used to stress/destress sections of rail that have been used for long periods of time,and/or have been subject to wide temperature variations.. A sort of bogie, I understand.

Neat. Viewers should bear in mind that in the North East, rappers are usually sword dancers. Which gives a whole new meaning to HOLD AWAY & ****-up...
We went to Beamish today, hoping to watch the rappers performing near the Band Hall that was opened yesterday. But the heavens opened and we came away. The wooden boards that they were to dance on had been left out in the wet and were badly warped, it could well have ended in carnage. Rapping and ****-ups go well together, in various contexts.

Just to add to Moira's comment, here is a LINK about rapper sword dancing. Though I did know of (= once heard mention of) the rapper in a NE pit, probably in a work song.
An excellent Silly Sunday contribution, Jack, a placard that I must seek out next time at Tanfield.
Not one to play fast and loose with!

Thank you Bill. Sorry to hear that Beamish was rained off.
I've had a look at the link, and I'll explore the site more fully later.
Malc's link takes one to the info That rapping in the pits was a signalling technique. Reminds me of the old song "knock three times on the ceiling if you want me..." You'll be too young to know that song.
The notice is towards the far end of the shed, opposite side to the windows.

Regards,

Jack
