..before the snow!

I did a spontaneous drive up to Malham yesterday afternoon after the weather seemed to improve here at home and I was watching sunshine and showers with the occasional rainbow thrown in... thought it might be nice to get a rainbow up at Malham.. (said she....). Well got up there, got The Rug hauled over the stile/fence, got onto the pavement, and got about 3-4 pics taken. Saw the next "squall" coming in - no prob.. sit it out and rainbows come after squalls when the cloud breaks and the sun shines again.. not this time though - the squall started as hail then ended as snow being blown in horizontally from the southwest and 20 mins later the scene was totally different - total whiteout! Was interesting getting off the pavement and more interesting driving back downhill!

Smile

A real mixed bag of weather. Caught some nice lighting on the limestone to bring out the oranges/browns against that brooding sky. Must get there sometime, but it's nearly a 2hr trip, no excuse I hear you say. Wink

That sounds amazing Jeanie, great effort in getting up there and this is lovely. Snow socks are always good for snowed up roads. Wink

Thank you Ian, Harsharn, Bryan, Martin and Howie.

Ian, whats two hours? lol... was hour and 20 mins for me from Blackpool Wink

Harsharn I only had wellies socks...would they have done?? hehe..
. I did wimp out and avoided going back down to Malham as thats the way the snow was being blown from - slowly headed across the tops and dropped down at Langcliffe instead, in the (correct) hope it was leeward and not as bad Smile

Great effort there Jeanie - I was in Keswick and it was just as bad!
Very nice colour on the limestone and you've done really well with the sky.

You got some great mood here. Sounds as though you paid a bit of a price with the weather but that is often the way! A

Well, you got in a fine shot with this one before the weather turned for the worse, Jeanie: such an excellent spot for so many different interpretations.
Ronnie.

Ah the joys of trying to second guess the weather in our island nations. That limestone looks dangerous when you can see it and a lot worse when you can't. You've managed a good image before it all went pear shaped Jeanie, well done, and good to hear you got down again without any mishap.

Thanks Geoff, Ron, Andy, Arthur, Ronnie, Mark, Alun, Martin and Dougie.

Martin your drive sounded safer lol! This was an afternoon visit - never left home till after lunch Wink

Dougie the pavement can be dicey - but the wind got up so much it was safer to wait till that died off rather than be blown and slip..and The Rug got an extra Bonio for being a good navigator Grin

I made it up the road from Malham the following afternoon in my little 4x4 but it was more than a bit dodgy! Then I got parked, looked west and there was a wall of black heading my way so I bottled it and limped back down to Malham. Good job I did too as it was wet snow on and off all afternoon after that. Walked over from the top of the cove on Sat but then it was very bright light and hazy blue skies so still no pictures :-(

Shame to see that big bow hanging of the old tree too. It makes you wonder how much longer the whole thing will be standing...

Sorry meant to ask. Am I right in thinking that the only way to get to the tree is by climbing (or more stepping) over the fence? I feel very uncomfortable about doing that sort of thing (although I did do it) especially in full view of the road with farmers driving past all the time!

Hi Den.. sound like you will have to return.. Smile That road is a pain in snow but at least you foresaw it and were in the safety of the village below. Hope you get back and get what you want soon.. I felt like dragging that broken branch away but thought better of it.
Given that we have lost two Scottish trees over the last year, I also wonder like you how long this will last. It does get some hammering.
Yes you are allowed to go over though. There is a stile to the left of the fence as you look from the road/gate.. Smile

I obviously missed the stile. Maybe it was burried in the snow!!!

I thought the same as you about the branch so went over to try and dislodge it but it's still firmly attached for the moment so there was no shifting it :-(
