I like the space - its weight doesn't distract and actually heightens the focus on the boy with teddy.

superb. I think you've got the balance just right. I think the immense darkness is necessary for such a strong impact on the actual subject.

Very worthy of the EC by a long shot.

That's me inspired for the weekends shooting. Now where did her teddybear get to....

Cracking.

Brilliant composition. The wide angle works really well, as does the lighting. The position of the teddy really sets the scene! It could be interpretted either as an endearing scene or as an ominous one! Big thumbs up from me either way.

Negative space - Not at all.
Excellent image, reduce the black on the right and the composition does not work so well, as the little boy becomes too dominant in the image. Keeping the child as a small part of the shot conveys a feeling of vunrability which is what this image is all about.

Super work

Roger

Just want to add something on this. When I first saw it, it made me think of christmas time. The child opening the door to find father christmas putting the present on the tree.

Then I felt cold. Like it was a scene from a horror film.

I can honestly say a photo has never gotten me like this before so it's a bloody winner.

This will get lots of attention and lots of awards.

Spread it around.

Thanks for your comments. I'm delighted that this has had such an effect on you. Some people look at it and smile, some cringe. Photography should be able to stir the emotions & I was lucky enough (for once) to be able to create a photo that did just that. I know for me, that it depends on what mood I'm in on the day I look at this as to whether I feel a smile coming or a shiver up my spine.

Thank you all again for your comments.

Brilliant. In high contrast lighting situations I am always torn between trying to achieve a tonal range that we might achieve with the human eye or going for the dramatic contrasty lighting that the camera records unmanipulated. The fact that most of the photo is pitch black but an effective part of the composition really rubishes some people's obsession with shadow detail. Inspiring stuff. Nice one.

No negative space here. The black area is as effective as the main part of the image and it puts fear into the composition.
It has a sinister mood to it but is also beautiful. It conjures up all sorts of eerieness and uncomfortable feelings.

What more could I add, well, this ones a personal favourite...of the many that I've seen in this site...although such images are quite common, one still gotta take them, and you have done well here, needs no reminding ofcourse....this picture perhaps invokes in me the feelings of my own childhood, that of fear of the dark...and embracing the bright light...
