Saved a few poppies from the garden before the wind and rain ruined them. Undecided about whether to leave this without a border, but at the last moment decided it probably did need it ......... so just a thin unadorned red line.

As ever your comments and critique will be much appreciated, best learning curve I know .........

Not a fan of borders personally, but I like everything else! Very well controlled exposure, not easy to keep the whites white.

Nice. Like the water drops on the vase and the leaf at the base sets it off for me.Smile

Good use of space in this simple, but so effective image!

Less is clearly more. I personally think a border was needed to create separation between the image and the surrounding background. I really like the saturated Red of the poppy and green of the stem against the whites of the vase and the background. The shadow and shading of the vase have been handled particularly well with either a mix of perfect exposure or very good processing. You could of had an infinity background where the background and base blend but the horizontal join and reflections add a touch of realism. And the finishing touch of the fallen leaf finishes the image perfectly.

Identical shot with a white reflective base showing the whole image as a reflection might be nice.

Regards

Russell

So well composed and those white tones are just right. The little drops of moisture on the vase and the dropped leaf complete the image. I think you needed a fine border just to separate the image from the background, but perhaps not red. The detail and texture of the flower is lovely.

Thanks for all the interesting comment folks, did ponder long and hard about border or no border, eventually went for the border as it did seem to just add that 'separation' as mentioned above; the colour of the border was the next thing to ponder and decided to go for the red to enhance the poppy head as being the main impact of the image, as opposed to either black or green which didn't do that. As ever all comments, critique and votes are much appreciated and I do always 'listen' to critique as that is always the best way to learn and progress.

Good colour Jenni & some nice detail.
Just enough exposure to separate the vase from the bg.
The leaf so adds to the image for me........I do have a habit of dropping something at the bottom of the flower/container,it seems to hold the viewers eye in the frame.
The border is ok but I would have liked to have seen it surrounding the whole image, not 'just inside',as it crosses the line created by the table/whatever the vase is stood on & so bits appear out of the frame, which I think is distracting.Much better to have perhaps a totally white slim border around the frame & the red keyline right on the edge.
