Ta Tien Hou Temple or Matsu Temple, used to be the palace of the exiled Ming prince Chu Shu-kuei until 1683 when it was converted into a temple devoted to Matsu by the Ching general Shi Lang.
Matsu is the “Goddess of Mercy” or "Queen of Heaven". This temple is the oldest official temple to Matsu in all of Taiwan, it faces west on a slope looking out to the old city wharf. Today Tainan is a short distance distance from the sea and the port is called Anping.
I visited the temple few days before the Chinese New Year. It is an important time for the Taiwanese in their preparation for the Lunar New Year which was on Monday, January 26, 2009 — The Year of the Ox. It is a time to honour the Gods and pay homage to one’s Ancestors and the series of photos up-loaded today show people at various shrines within the Matsu Temple.
Thank you for your comments on Tainan night’s market. Hoping you’ll find today’s upload of some interest.
Have a nice evening,
Jean-Noël
