Taiwan is a real Butterfly Kingdom. This island has a very high density of butterfly species with around 400 butterfly species (Europe and the North Africa have around 440 species). The Maolin area, is famous for birds and many butterfly species. Migratory butterflies settle there in winter before flying back North in March. They can fly as far as China and Japan.
This attractive specimen is a Large- or Common Grass Yellow (Eurema hecabe) belonging to the small pieridae butterfly species found in Asia which are found flying close to the ground, in open grass and scrub habitats. It is simply known as "the grass yellow" in parts of its range; the general term otherwise refers to the entire genus Eurema. It’s small: 35-45mm.
Like the previous butterflies posted this week it was taken early in the morning as the sun rays reach the valley near Maolin.
