I like the photo. (I like kid photos). The only Improvments I would make is the pink hat is distracting and some of the highlights are blown out. You could also change the color of the boys shorts.
The narrow depth of field is great.
I also know when you take photos of kids you do it while they are in the mood or I just does not work.
