Nikon afs 105 vr macro
They all do it, nothing wrong with the lens!
I'm sure some one will come along and explain the tech side.

Phase One Capture One Express 6.
I have also won a copy and downloaded the trial version, but to be honest I don't think I will use it so the first person to get in touch can have my copy for free.

Nikon D600
I have a D600 and after the first few shots it had loads of marks on the sensor, just gave it a wet swab and It's been fine taken over 2500 since with no issues.

I recommend getting some kind of sensor loop it makes it much easier to see what you are doing.

Lenses for Mull
It deppends how close to the boat they come! I have been on that boat a few times and used a 500mm on a 1D and found it just about right but longer would have been a bonus.

It was very windy when I went out and the sea was quite choppy and looking down a 500mm when trying not to fall over and avoid bumping into other people on board was quit a challenge in these circumstances the zoom might be a better choice!

If I was to do it again I would have a zoom on one body and a 500/600 on another.

The advantage of a longer lens for me was being able to pick up the bird further out I got some nice shots of the bird with the coast and hills in the back ground instead of just sky.

Have you tried keeping your left eye open to track the target, takes a while to get used to but worth the effort.

Thanks for the Invite Chery, anyone got any exciting projects that they are starting or carrying on for this year. I am hoping to get some Otter shots on one of the rivers in North East Wales, had some good sightings but mainly at Dawn or dusk.

Canon 500mm F4L on a monopod.
I use a Gitzo GM551 mono which is a very sturdy item probably overkill for a 500 but better to safe than sorry, screwed directly on to the monopod is a Kirk Quick Release Clamp ( Two and a half inch long ).
This is a great set up for wildlife when a mobile approach is required. I carry some Velcro straps which you can use to fasten the monopod to something like a gate or fencepost and gives you a steadier shooting position.
The carrying strap for the monopod has a belt clip on it which I find to be very handy.

Information wanted on wildlife of Scotland
Try the Isle of Mull, I was there for the first two weeks of May and had a great time. If you want Eagles one of the best places to try is Loch Na Keal ,on one day there were eight immature white tailed sea eagles at the end of the loch just hanging around on the beach being mobbed by the gulls, at the same time there was a golden eagle in the air and an otter swimming past in the loch. If you want close up pictures of the Sea Eagles on Mull get in touch with Mull charters they do Eagle feeding off the back of a boat and you're guaranteed some excellent views. and if you want pictures of otters try behind the miniature railway at Craignure they are quite regular and this year there was a female adult and 1 cub plus the dog otter doing regular patrols.

Shooting Birds in Flight - Advice needed
Set camera to M

ISO- keep as low as possible.

AF selection- Center only.

Metering mode -Spot

WB-Auto.

AF Mode = AI Servo.

Drive Mode = High Speed Continuous.

Shutter mode- Depends if you want to freeze the action or have a bit of motion blur, I normally use 1/400 - 1/1200 Sec.

Use a mid tone to set your exposure.

Keep an eye on the changing light as you will changing your aperture and ISO very often to maintain the right exposure.

And a lot of practice.

CS4 - can't open my 5D mk 11 raw files
Had the same problem with the 5.5 upgrade when I was using Vista, changed over to Windows 7 this week and just run the update now after reading this thread. Installed first time!!!

May just be a coincidence but I sure am glad to get rid of Vista.

Donna Nook
When I have been to photograph the Seals at Donna Nook i have found the best time to be around mid November - December.

I try to coincide my visit there with sunrise occurring at or just before low tide. ( You really do need the light on your side at Donner Nook, if it's a cloudy day I will give it a miss). I always use a tripod so you can get a low down POV ( a bean bag on a tray is a good alternative).

I use the Sigma 105 and 150 they are both great but i prefer the 150. But if I had £1K to spend now I would probably get the new Canon.

Canon 500F4 usm is lens
Fast enough for winter sports, long enough for small birds, you can also shoot in whatever style you want and looks good with a lens coat on. Will auto focus with a 2x extender on a one series body.
It make quit a good landscape lens as well.
It's simply the best.

Lenses for puffins
There were no Puffins on Staffa when I went in May but on Lunga a different story altogether, have to be the most friendliest I have encountered and that includes the Farnes and Skomer even had one looking in my camera bag. Most of mine were taken with my 500 but I also used a 70-200 and 1.4 on another body and got some nice shots and all were taken hand held. If you go with a 300 and 1.4 you won't be disappointed. If you want a good place for Otters on Mull let me know and I'll send you a pm.

Isle of Skye - Wildlife
Stayed at the campsite at Uig this year for two nights I had a pitch by the house right by the beach, was watching the Otter right in front of the site. Spoke to the owner about it and he said it has been seen walking down the middle of the site. If it's wildlife your after I would recommend you go over to Mull and book yourself on one of the Wildlife watching tours.

Our images are being stolen ....
A great man once said ‘imitation is the greatest form of flattery’. Someone also described plagiarism ‘as mans lowest ebb’

When this was first brought to my attention by fellow genuine and honest photography enthusiasts I must admit I did allow anger to enter my heart. However after reading the messages posted on the forum I have now cooled down and feel a great deal of pity towards XXXXX.

Obviously he is deluded and gains some personal satisfaction from stealing not only other peoples work but also their most personal of possessions – their ideas.

My anger turned into an overwhelming desire to help XXXX. Maybe his social calendar is that full and all of his precious time spent with loved ones and friends that he is unable to devote the effort and commitment to the art as the rest of us.

I am thinking of starting a campaign to help this sad pitiful creature. I would like to send him some self help books that we have in our local bookstore; ‘How to communicate with normal people’ ‘A Girl is not a 2-Dimensianal figure from magazines’ ‘How to be comfortable with yourself even if your Family think you are a social outcast and a skid mark on the Undies of Life’.

If anyone has his address I would be most appreciative.

P.S. I also plan to send a puncture repair kit as it has been a while since he last had any action. Or maybe the stealing underbelly of society requires some batteries.
