About Me

Please excuse my erratic behavior as at the moment I am trying to get back to the UK but have trouble with the Embassy who are of little help and must soon take very drastic measures to leave South Africa. Should I just not be here then I will be on my travels.

Originally from Newcastle Staffs. Started Photography at a young age and my first Camera was medium format (Yashica 635) this I took on a skiing course with the British army many years ago in Germany. I quickly changed to 35mm and purchased an Exacta. I came to SA in 1983 and had a Canon AE1 and an A1 and traveled extensively taking wild life. I soon joined The Photographic society of SA and was active for many years in Monochrome and Color prints which of course I developed myself, also doing Slides and and printing Ciba Chromes and R4 from these. The invention of Digital was at an early stage and I was entering national and international Salons at this time. I changes from wild life after becoming a Dive instructor (part time) and purchased an Ikelite housing with two further Canons T50 and T70 for under water work. I took interested people on underwater photography courses whist showing international tourists all about sharks and and taking them to see them. I have dived with all the sharks except for the Great white, unfortunately only coming close to this Shark just once. I have taken 3000 people to see sharks under the water and never have I used a cage. I have become a conservationist and a protector of sharks as a species. Also of wild life and my photography is all based on events and natural environments. I have only recently purchased a digital Camera and I am quite impressed with the quality achieved after spending so much time waiting for some kind of quality. I do think that PS has its uses but not in nature photography as then it would not be natural and would not be nature.

I have been attacked by hippo and Rhino whilst on foot in Natal. Also I have been Mock Charged by a Bull Elephant. Whilst in the Kalahari I have come face to face with a pride of lions in an open Land Rover whilst going from the bright sunlight into the shade of a tree, but they were not hungry, hence I am still kicking here. The only thing that scares me is a Crocodile and have never ventured to close, at least I don't think so.

At this moment my choice to leave this country is based on my residency of which that's a problem, I am divorced and have a 25yo daughter here in SA, the only way I can leave is to spend some months in an internment camp and then to be Deported from here. So to arrive back in the UK with nothing and no family, will be very traumatic as is my decision to take this option. So shoudl I just not be here, I am sorry, one day maybe I will be back on EPZ, but for now all take care of yourselves. Kind regards...John
