a lot of patience. Where do you shoot mostly? You can always set up a feeder in your yard and if you have a remote, set up your camera and sit furher away and hit the remote as the birds are feeding

Aw - he really does look bedraggled! I think watching the birds and knowing their habits really helps. Then you can predict what they're likely to do next and be ready for the shot.
