Taken at the Lakeland Bird of Prey centre in Cumbria. I don't care for the pink background colour, but that was how it was.
Despite the b/g tone, it's still a fine detailed portrait, Ken.
Ken, don't think we have 'corresponded' previously but i am known for being a little pedantic regards photography (one of many character flaws)
If you don't care for the pink background colour, you do realise there is a really simple solution? Don't take the image.
On the plus side, good detail there and an accidentally (P mode) reasonable d-o-f, i think the composition is perhaps a little central however and would have been improved by setting the subject with more 'talk space'
Well done also for adopting an almost eye-level viewpoint, makes a massive difference!
Just look at those lovely eyes and forget about the background.

Opinions will always vary - had similar conversation with new club member last week...
I said "why are you taking that Owl with a great blooming shed in the background?"
"ooh, it's a lovely Owl" they answered
"No-one is debating that, but it's still a lovely Owl if you take 3 steps left and now have a tree in the background" i advised.
Suffice to say, that sometimes there is very little additional thought / observation / effort required to improve our images. That may not have been the case for Ken here but if we want to be photographers as opposed to people that own cameras then i maintain that the answer here was possibly do not take it.
Some interesting debate going on.
His look made me laugh! Lovely image.
Well, it's still a good 'un of the owl, despite the yucky background! I would have selected the background and either desaturated all the colour, or changed it to something like green
