Hi Kim,

Definite hdr look to this, which has given the crane a great 'gritty' look.

You've produced a huge amount of really great stuff this year - congrats on nearly winning the HPC open trophy in your first year! Hope you aren't too disappointed, but I think the Phillips household did pretty well. Keep doing the stuff that you love to do - it's your originality that shines through.

I love what you are doing here, John. Interesting new style you have going. This is a beatiful tranquil shot with subtle tones. Hope you don't mind me mentioning, but it would be worth straightening the horizon, because it can be quite distracting to have it on a slight slant.
Here's a weird thing. I find that if I block off the left side of the photo (half way), and just leave a square composition with the right half, the image is simplified and looks more powerful (to my eyes). Just a thought...

Kim, like this a lot, and it captures the spirit of the day well. In the spirit of constructive critisism, I have a couple of suggestions:

- There's quite a lot of movement in the clouds and the tree behind the train that have caused the hdr layers to be unaligned. Could you pull this into photoshop and paint in the low exposure layer into the sky?

- The reds on the buffers look a bit overblown to me - probably caused by the hdr processing. Could you pull the red saturation down a bit?

BTW, I haven't even had a chance to upload my photos from Saturday to the computer yet, so it's easy for me to critisise

I like the idea of this, Kim, but the halo around the shed is so pronounced that it puts me off a bit. Look at it as a thumbnail and you see it best. As ever, you've got a good eye, though. Still gets my vote...

For some reason this gives me the heeby-geebies. Dramatic shot with lots of impact. Agree with the others about cloning out the alarm.

Why is it that so many hdr shots look weird as a thumbnail? Seems like there's a hell of a bright halo round the shelter - can't help thinking you could do a better job bringing in the various exposures on layers and using layer masks. I'm getting to be an old-time traditionalist
