Been up there a long time, by the looks of things... This is beautiful, ghostly, wildly imaginative work.
It reminds me very strongly of the Quebecois Chasse Galerie tradition.
This began as a medieval French story, from the Poitou area. The Sieur de Galerie ignores the priest's demands that he attend Mass on Sunday and goes hunting with his friends. They see a stag and give chase. The stag flies into the sky and challenges them to follow. The stag is the Devil, and they are doomed to hunt the skies to all eternity.
The legend travelled to Canada with French settlers, but gradually took on a new life. The Devil appears on dark nights to young woodcutters in the forests, and dares them to sail the skies with him in a canoe. Few ever return. Look out on a dark night and you may see the ghostly boat in the sky with its crew of lost souls...
Sorry, I have some very odd interests!
