Bread, Butter, and Milk 2
From a different angle perhaps from the butter end of the shot so that the crust of the slices are all showing the grain of the product. Your choice of aperture would then have allowed the milk jug to be a little more out of focus rather than the grain of the bread thats immediately to the front of the image as viewed. I also think you should have kept all of the kinife in view. I generally like your food product idea and this is what made me view it in the first place, but seeing as you have requested critque I've left some.

Newquay Harbour - 2010
Good detail captured however the shot may have been enhanced further if the background had been out of focus more, this is dependent on the distance between you and the subject and aperture you are shooting at, I notice you were using f5.6 when F4 was available. You could use the lens blur feature in Photoshop to achieve the background if you wished.

Try experimenting with different white balance settings, even if its bright set your white balance to cloudy and this will warm the scene a good deal, its easily adjusted if your not happy with the result later in an editing package like Canon's own DPP or others such as Pshop or Adobe Elements. I would have liked to have seen more of the splash in the shot to the right as viewed also.

Landscape may have suited it better as its framed a little tight to the stern of the craft. A lead along the mooring rope into the scene may have provided a more pleasing comp. There's always lots of different things that can be done. Your editing is alright, but perhaps too much empty space both top and bottom of the shot, another reason for a landscape composition approach, But it is ok and you did ask
