Very cute shot indeed. Covered in sand makes it different and a little special.

I would crop from the left, and in the mod Ive sharpened the eyes only.

I think you should have handled it like your himan portraits and shoot it vertically. But the animal is still beautifully captured.

The basic image is well done and there is nothing wrong with a landscape format - however, you have a bit too much background and not enough Meerkat. you may have already cropped, but I would retain landscape but crop to place the head on the right third with quit a bit off the top and right
