The detail of the clothing is completely lost because of the white balance obviously being averaged out over the pic, with the white wall dominating. Try Spot Metering on your 40D, it may well give a much better result.
Alternatively, look for a less contrasting background to enable the detail to be seen.
If you're shooting Jpeg I urge you to try RAW, which will give you many more options than just Shadows&Highlights.
