Not an easy image to capture. Its under-exposed yet the highlites are burnt out. I shoot in raw and I will push the exposure as far to the right as possible but avoiding burnout (the highlights will flash in black on the LCD if there is no detail in them).

As you have shot this in raw, try re-processing it just for the highlights. Then in photoshop use the shadow/highlite tool to bring back detail, but beware the default setting can be too harsh. I would suggest entering values of 0 in both the black and white clip box, a shadow amount between 10 & 15 (try 12), tonal value to 25, Highlight amont to 1, highlight tonal value to 12 and click save to make these settings your default.

Bring up levels and hold down the ALT key as you drag the left and right sliders, anything thats out of range will then flash black or white. I don't bother adjusting contrst in levels I use Unsharp mask.

Try a value of 12/50/0 to apply some local contrast enhancement and give the image some punch.

Thanks for the comments everyone. And thanks for the tips Simon, TBH I dont know why I shoot in RAW because I'm rubbish at processing them. I've had a bit of a play, but I'm not sure what you mean by re=process just for highlights. Maybe one day I'll get round to watching the half dozen DVDs I've got on Photoshop!

Some good advice here, but if I am honest, I have no clou what Simon is talking about. He obviously knows more than I do.
I like the image, not only for those beautiful eyes, I think the feathers are also nice and look very real,
I'd be proud if I had posted this,
Johanna
