Spotted this in the corner of a field in Dentdale, Yorkshire Dales. I have no idea what it was, is, or what lives in it. Any ideas?

Its a mobile fairy hut, what with global warming and and all they find toadstools a bit uncomfortable now plus they like to travel, hence the wheels!

I recognise this as a rare example of a First World War, Belgian Comedy Latrine. Rare enough in Belgium (the 17th and 21st Comedy Latrine Battalions were virtually wiped out in the first few weeks of action at Ypres), this particularly fine example is an amazing find in Yorkshire! Has the Imperial War Musuem been informed. Of no commercial value, the historical importance of this find cannot be under-estimated.

can't believe you have seen one of these, I remember my grandad building one years ago when he used to have rabbits. Inside the house there are different levels the food goes at the top the sleeping in the middle. The little ladder allows the rabbit to hop up into the house, and the wheels allow the big old house to be moved about the garden so that bad weather etc can be dodged, also with the wheels the main house can be kept vertical as the body of the house is off the ground. So regardless of the terrain, its always vertical. What a wonderful sight. (cant help grinning if you lot have actually read this far and have believed it!)

I thought you were serious Andrew!!! Bad you!! Though it was a bit more plausible than Mikes (novocastria). Now I know that Mike is not serious because the Comedy Latrine Battalions that got wiped out in Ypres were the 10th and the 18th. And you call yourself a World War One historian!!!

Its a left-over escape device from "Chicken Run". (the one before they got the wings fixed Smile

Then again, K could be on to something - it may be a "Victorian Fairies Beach Bathing Machine"?

Well I think the mobile fairy hut is a strong possibility but the Belgian Comedy Latrine sounds far more plausible!

Excellent stuff folks, thanks.

It's a trap to tempt swarming bees. Simple as that. Would have thought it was instantly recogniseable. Now I am going to search for 220 Roll Film again.
Hope this helps.
