I finally got round to editing some more of my big cat images so it is back to WHF for some Savage SundayShots (can't beat a bit of alliteration)!

A Black Jaguar this time and of all the big cats seen that day, the Jaguars were undoubtedly the scariest. An American big cat, the jaguar is largely a solitary, opportunistic, stalk-and-ambush predator at the top of the food chain. It is a keystone species, playing an important role in stabilizing ecosystems and regulating the populations of the animals it hunts. The jaguar has an exceptionally powerful bite, even relative to the other big cats. This allows it to pierce the shells of armoured reptiles and to employ an unusual killing method: it bites directly through the skull of prey between the ears to deliver a fatal bite to the brain. For a demo see here -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WVdsejV2HQ Now that is scary!

Quite a tricky subject to photograph a) because she never stopped moving b) because she exuded attitude and c) because of the very dark fur. Though known as the black jaguar they are not evenly jet black and if you look closely you can see the spotted markings. I have tried to give you a variety of shots here including V2 which contains an extremely subtle self portrait. Sorry that 6 & 10 and 4 & 9 are so similar. They are in fact different shots, but Athena hasn't been to photographic modelling school yet and has a limited range of poses! Thank you for looking and I hope you enjoy some of them.

A wonderful set, Lynne, and excellent textures in her fur, she is a beauty, though could probably be very mean Smile Carol

Wonderfully fierce looking animal indeed. You've done so well capturing that attitude and superb details in the black fur. When we visited the Rain Forests in S America, so glad I hadn't read your info first, as this was one of the animals we were told lived there!!

Also impressed overall byt the subtle fur variations--superb focusing on this grand animal!

Excellent set,Lynne.
She is a bit scaring, but really beautiful, even though I still don't want to meet her in dark..Grin
The details of the images are superb. You are right, I believe that the dark fur +its restless made it difficult to get a good detail, but you managed it beautifully.
Very interesting eye.. I have never seen such a detailed one before..it looks less round as a cat one..beautiful clean image, very well done.

Surprised to see the spots and brownish marks too.I recall a visit to the zoo when I saw some zebras.I always thought they were black and white but they were more dark brown and white.Perhaps that was just my eyes though !!.
Good set.

Fascinating! I once read that black panthers are black versions of leopards. But I'd never heard of black jaguars! I've always thought jaguars were scarier than leopards. Not only more massive but good swimmers. Vs 1, 4, 6, 9 and 10 show how menacing they can look.

This is one helluva set, Lynne. And VERY composed non-frying pan reflection in V2 Grin

I gotta say my favourite two here are Vs 7 and 10. And your presentation of each pic is very cool. Saw the link too. Gosh...impressive hunters, these things!

By the way, will e-mail you pic of latest ultrafirmset jam after I'm finished with EPZ Smile
