Nirvana is the family property I have responsibility for and jam and chutney making is how I deal with the surfeit of fruit that the restored garden now produces. The photo of me stirring (no comments please, I mean stirring the jam) was taken by my husband GarrathE but the rest are mine. The work had to be done mainly outdoors as it was far too hot to work indoors. Fruits shown in the various images are figs, pomegranates, strawberries & assorted chillies (for my Mermelada Volcanica).
This trip we chinked our way down to Portsmouth then Bilbao to Calpe carrying 144 new, empty jars and lids, plus a brand new set of preserving kit. We arrived to find both fig trees, both pomegranate trees, all the strawberry plants and all the chilli plants absolutely loaded with fruit. I did as much as I could, stuffed the freezer and as we left, invited the neighbours to help themselves.
On the way back, because our ferry from Bilbao was cancelled, we chinked our way from Calpe right up to Calais, then Dover to Shipley carrying 60 full, large jars of jam plus several sample jars. 1,140 miles and not a jar broken!!!
Thank you for looking and I hope you enjoy the series.

An epic story of jams & preserves, plus an epic journey getting them home as well. I can almost smell the air as the fruit cooked on the stove.

I do like a jam roly poly Lynne or a Swiss Roll with the jam in it.Best if the wife could make it herself though as the ones she buys in the shops they must have put the jam on with a little paintbrush.I tried to unroll it once to layer more jam on it to suit my taste, but I ended up getting a sweeping brush to sweep the mess of the floor.Putting you own jam on it was harder than getting the toothpaste back into the tube I reckon. Not that I use toothpaste you understand as nowadays a little Steradent tablet in a glass with my teeth does the job.Perhaps that is why I have no teeth due to my love of jam Swiss rolls and roly poly's in the past. These teachers at school got it all wrong by telling me to stop smoking in the bike shed and stop taking a short cut through the girls gym hall on my way to the bike shed. They should have warned me of the dangers of my love of jam roly polys and Swiss rolls on my teeth.Just goes to show that a University education is not all that it is cracked up to be !!
Mick.
Looks very mouth watering Lynne, I do not think you have made enough for us all on EPZ though, never mind a jar of each please.
Great set of what is an art that is disappearing with ready made everything.
Regards
Trev.
where can we place orders? a tantalizing series!
Had no holidays this year, I would have loved to do just that!!
Sounds like you had quite an expedition, Lynne!
A fine and interesting set of images here - like how the jars are all perfectly lined up in V11 ![]()

Take a cyber jar with my compliments - your choice is Mermelada Volcanica (chilli & lemon , fiercely hot) Fig & Lemon, Seville Orange Marmalade or Strawberry & Lemon.
Mouth watering episode, aptly named Nirvana. Is that U in V6? The pipe should have removed in V8. You must be knowing that a Fig is a natures wonder for its healing /rejuvenating properties & aptly endorsed in Ayurveda .Thanks for sharing.
The pipe in V8 is our automatic watering system. It cost a fortune and I'm not removing it for anyone, not even in an image!!!
Now come on Lynne, rather showing off there in V11!
that many...better come down again so I can try some more..please![]()
A great series but what happened to the Portsmouth ones?
Hope to see those too
Glad it all turned out well in the end...strikers!!
Lillian
Fabulous. An epic tale from start to finish: what a wonderful process.
You have succeeded in making me want to eat jam - I don't, usually - with the thought of Mermelada Volcanica - and in coaxing another shady episode or three out of mikbee, trying to persuade us that his lack of teeth is due to Jam Action whereas we all believe that it was from his habit of chewing iron bars. Or was it irn bru?
Regards
Bill
What a feel-good set, from the tantalising hints of V1 to the final product.
Your account of the journey back made me laugh. We take part in our French twin-town's Christmas Market, and the main product that we take over is home-made marmalade - they can't get enough of it.
I remember years ago the car that I was in was pulled over at Dover for a drugs search. After the sniffer dogs had done their bit the Customs Officer asked to see in the boot.
I still remember the look on his face.

FYI - Garrath is referring to the 51 bottles of gluten free beer we clinked back with as well as the jam. In Spain gluten free beer is about 60p per bottle whereas in ripoff Britain it is between £2.50 and £4.00 per bottle!
Fabulous set you have been busy with a good harvest
A very interesting storey and set of images Lynne.
I do like v2 I think the light makes that a cracking shot.
Thanks again for the mods on “Tudor Mansion II”…….. I have sent you a reply.

Blimey I have three fig tree's and I'm the only one that like them apart from the wasps! I do bottle them in Whiskey lol. and they can last all year, I did think of trying my hand at chutney which I like, not starting a factory like yours though lol. a nice set very interesting, regards Leon.![]()

An interesting and very well documented series, Lynne. I have to say you look somewhat wary in the careful, at arms reach manner you are stirring! Now I understand why you had to endure the Boulevard Peripherique!

Brilliant Lynne - just brilliant! It is a perfect documentary of excellent images of tree to jar and on. Your set has arrived just in time as I'm right in the middle of trying to make some membrillo for the first time! But fabulous work here - and thanks for sharing the process.
Ann
What a wonderful illustrated story - you could almost make a book with the instructions and photos - I love v11 with them lined up on the wall ![]()

I think that Nirvana Jam Limited company needs a picture lable,
you are very good at turning photos into designs... use the origin fruits's photo sticks it on the jar, and tell people what you are eating is exactly from these fruits.. taken and made by you... put your little photo on it as well.. a very good and friendly PR.![]()
Lovely write up of you mediterranean adventure and a bumper crop over there by the looks of it!
The Fig jam looks scrumptious... In North London can only get it in a little Turkish shop. They get it delivered on Mondays, by Wednesday the shelf is empty...
In your lovely photos set today: V1 looks delicious (love fresh figs), V8 I loke the light on those chillies, V11 has a superb symmetry balance and V13 the ingredients lable (with amor) ![]()
