A visit to the Tanneries was on the agenda but we knew it wasn't going to be an aesthetically pleasing visit! The stench coming from the leather as it was being washed was appalling. They gave you mint leaves to carry to try to ward off the smell. What struck me were the terrible working and living conditions ( the families all lived on site) that the men had to endure.

... and then you get the hard sell from the shop keepers!! This view shows the conditions well, Maggie, a lovely balanced composition.

A fine capture with wonderful colour. I seem to recall urine being used in the tanning process - just as long as they don't offer the visitor a bucket in which to add a contribution.......I've yet to visit this place.

I'm sure you didn't linger - given, as mugshotmyk says correctly, the leathers are cured with urine!!! But a beautifully composed and illustrative shot, Maggie.

a fine capture indeed.. I would have cropped a bit closer, without the blue rags. Just an idea.

Great image, I've been there and you are right about the stench and the working conditions, it makes you feel bad bartering the leather goods sellers down when you know the conditions ensured to produce the product.
