The Great Spotted Woodpecker (dendrocopus major)
Had a stroke of luck with this beautiful GSW and managed to bag him in my back garden. Normally only a very rare visitor. Looks a deal smarter than my previous Woody.
Many appreciative thanks for the very generous c/c's given to the Mistle Thrush.

I love it when the woodpeckers come back to the garden. We usually have a pair and sometimes they bring their offspring to the feeder. I even had a regular visitor from a pileated woodpecker at my compost pile this summer. Unfortunately, I never could get a photo of him.

A cracking capture Ron, he certainly is a handsome chap. He's obviously a great deal smarter than that other woody you caught on camera as he's escaped your long lens up until today!
